Letterpress & paper guide

What is letterpress printing?

A relief printing method: a raised plate is inked and pressed into paper. On thicker, softer stocks this leaves a visible impression; on firmer papers the effect is subtler.

How should I prepare artwork?

Vector files (PDF or SVG) with text converted to outlines work best. Keep each ink colour as a separate, solid element. Send what you have — we'll review it and flag anything that needs adjusting.

What should I consider when choosing paper?

Thicker cotton papers take a deeper impression; smoother stocks hold fine detail. Coloured papers change how inks appear, so paper and colour are best chosen together.

Ink and printing considerations

Each letterpress ink colour is usually a separate pass on press. Large solids print with a slightly textured look, and very fine lines may need thickening. Full-colour artwork is often better suited to offset or digital printing.

What does a typical project look like?

Discuss, prepare, print, finish — with a proof for your approval before anything goes to press.

How long will my project take?

Timing depends on the method, quantity and finishing. Tell us your ideal date in your inquiry and we'll confirm what's realistic.
